Google is tightening Android app memory rules as AI eats through hardware supplies

New Android quality gates will target memory use, crashes and device migration as Google warns of serious hardware constraints.

Google is introducing tougher Android app-quality requirements as the AI boom puts pressure on the wider memory-supply chain.

The company says developers will face new expectations around dynamic memory use, bitmap handling and code optimisation, with the aim of reducing app slowdowns and crashes.

Less memory waste

Google plans to provide new diagnostic tools that warn developers when an app exceeds the relevant thresholds. A later “memory limiter” feature will help teams reproduce and analyse apps that consume too much memory.

The changes are aimed especially at lower-cost phones, where bloated apps can turn an otherwise usable device into a pocket-sized loading screen.

Android migration gets an upgrade

Google is also requiring apps with account sign-in to support the Restore Credentials API by April 2027. When users move to a new Android phone or tablet, supported apps should be able to restore their login state without forcing another password hunt.

Developers are expected to complete the memory-related changes by February 2027.

Our opinion

This is the sort of housekeeping Android has needed for years. AI may be swallowing memory at the data-centre end, but ordinary phones should not suffer because an app cannot tidy up after itself.

The danger is that vague thresholds become another compliance chore without improving real-world software. If Google’s tools are clear and the limits are enforced consistently, users should notice fewer crashes without ever knowing why.

The automatic login restoration is arguably the more immediately useful change. Nobody buys a new phone hoping to spend the afternoon proving they still own every app they installed.
